For this very purpose, (Latham, 2003) suggests “Goal Setting”, which is useful for both long and short term milestones. As long as the goal is based on the SMART analysis: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and have a time-frame and you are committed to your goal, the probability of success is higher.
This article focuses on the “super- ordinate goal from both the individual and the organization as a whole process.
Every individual has some idea about where he wants to reach in his/her life, best known as “self-actualization”. Self actualization describes a desire or motivation to achieve budding ambitions and this desire leads to the visualizing of the super-ordinate goal. For instance, for most international students funding their studies is a very difficult task, especially when it’s a full time study. However, most of them are capable of handing not only their studies but also have two part time jobs. It’s because they have a super-ordinate goal in their minds, for instance to become successful or to have a better job to earn for their family back home.
For the organization, the super ordinate goal and planning plays a greater role, as in the case of PT Timah. The organization suffered from “bad pain”, even after they went through a rigorous restructuring of the organization. (MCallaster, 2004)
Dr. Kuntoro was the role model for a leader, he understood that the organization lacked “shared values: Vision, Mission and Values” according to the McKinsey 7’s Model. Once that was established in a super-ordinate goal, in the PT Timah case the (3K): togetherness, openness, cleanliness, enforced in the corporate values (PTPRS): trust, open, positive, rational, cost consciousness; the whole organization worked towards achieving it.
