The seminar
I attended the first seminar timings: 10:00- 12:00 by Gabriel Sundqvist, founder and CEO of Pronto.
As mentioned earlier that we perceived the whole seminar thing as a de javu of the same context we had come across many times before. However, since Gabriel was my age fellow being only 2 years older than me, I wanted to know how he achieved the title of an entrepreneur in such a short age. The question that I put forward to myself before the seminar was: If he can do it, that means I can do it…but are the terms the same? What points will he delivers that I will be able to use for my current studies and my professional career?
Gabriel had listed ten main reasons why one should pursue being an entrepreneur and correct me if I am wrong one main reason for not being an entrepreneur.
The seminar followed the same principle that Sheridan mentioned in one of his lecture with us: ”Keep it Simple and Stupid”. Gabriel had approached the topic of an entrepreneur as his experience had taught him and which I found interesting as it was not only related to the business entrepreneur but as a responsible individual.
Among the ten reasons why one should be an entrepreneur: freedom, togetherness, pride and explore were the ones that I thought that fitted with my own character. His seminar was more of an advise to the potential entrepreneurs, which I thought was really important as he was trying to make us prepared for some common future problems (encountered by most entrepreneurs) and also provide us with some tips as how to solve them.
Lonely road
The road to entrepreneurship is “a lonely one” as quoted by Gabriel, the reason is because good ideas always have enemies therefore one can always find people who are either jealous or want to use the idea for their own benefit. Thence to protect his or her idea, the entrepreneur needs to stay aloof and keep his distance from such people. This also brings us to his other advise, in times when we think we can go no more and have had enough, that is the time when we go the extra mile.
Social game
One main problem with working with team members and being the manager is that you become the person they hate. This is called the social game, for instance (hypothetically) if the CEO is not fair to Stacy, due to word of mouth; Stacy can cause his respected reputation to be destroyed among his colleagues and subordinates. Gabriel suggested the best way to approach the social game is to identify it first and turn it around to serve it your advantage.
Togetherness
Always remember your family and friends, share sorrow but also success. The reason is because they will stand by you no matter what.
Other tips
· Increase your personal network
· Hire the best team players and trust their talents and abilities, don’t underestimate them!
· Make companies call you
· Make history by helping people in NGO’s
· Look for inspirations all around the world.
· Buy companies and innovate with whatever is already available, because it’s cheaper ,
Lastly, Gabriel mentioned that one reason why one should not pursue being an entrepreneur is for the sake of money. (Wiklund. J and Dahlqvist. J,2007)confirms it being the entrepreneur way and said that the entrepreneur among all the resources in the PROFIT typology, financial resources should be the least priority one. There is a solid reason for this statement, entrepreneurs don’t worry about money is because when they focus on other resources, Venture capitals and other investment provide them with the amount they are missing.
